Remove Ghost VMs from a Hyper-V Failover Cluster (2019)

Updated: Nov 14, 2022

Sometimes when a Hyper-V Host crashes, ghost VMs can appear in a Hyper-V cluster. Ghost VMs are duplicate VMs that you cannot remove in the regular way. You might find the same VM "running" on multiple hosts inside a Hyper-V Cluster.

This is a guide on removing that Ghost VM. Make sure you are removing the correct VM. You can check each host to see where the actual VM is located.

Warning: This procedure removes the Ghost VM from the Hyper-V Cluster. Do not delete the production VM located on your Hyper-V Host.

Steps:

1. Locate and select the VM in the Hyper-V Failover Cluster

2. View the “Resources” tab

3. Expand the Virtual Machine listing and right click the Virtual Machine Configuration

4. Select Properties

5. Delete ALL Dependencies that are found

6. Select OK

7. Right click the Virtual Machine Configuration again and select REMOVE

8. Once the Virtual Machine Configuration has been removed, right click the Virtual Machines record and select REMOVE as well.

9. You can now search for the VM in the Failover Cluster and Remove it from there
