Password Management 101

A plan to help you manage your passwords in a secure way.

Managing and protecting your passwords is crucial in this digital/information age. In the past, people would use a sticky-note or notebook to store all of their passwords. This isn't very safe, but it beats re-using the same password all over the internet. Find out a better and more secure alternative to keeping your online accounts protected.

The best practice standard for password management is to use a different password for each of your online accounts. Memorizing all of your passwords can be troublesome if you don't use a password managing tool like Nord Pass, Last Pass, or 1Password. Even if you do use a password manager, there is no guaranty that your passwords won't be compromised. The safest and most reliable method, in my professional opinion, is as follows...

The best strategy for creating and memorizing passwords is to have one standard, but complex, password that you re-use for all of your accounts; this way you will always remember it.

BUT.. each account's password needs to be slightly different. See below:

Use this as a reference - MyComplexPassword123! + (the first two letters of the webpage)

For example:

  • Facebook (fa) - MyComplexPassword123!fa

  • Instagram (in) - MyComplexPassword123!in

  • LinkedIn (li) - MyComplexPassword123!li

  • Amazon (am) - MyComplexPassword123!am

  • Citi Bank (cb) - MyComplexPassword123!cb

Do you see what we did there? You have a standard complex password that you modify slightly with each online account. For each account, you can take the first two letters of the service/website and use that at the end of your password. You can also use acronyms instead of the first two letters. Just make sure it is something you will remember.

I hope this password strategy helps you during the process of securing your online profile. Be sure to check out our other password related articles to help you recover access to your compromised online accounts.
